The Pick of the Day is a limited-run 1954 Buick Skylark luxury convertible designed by Harley Earl. One of GM’s most notable vehicle designers, Earl was responsible for placing fins on Cadillacs, creating wraparound windshields and designing America’s most iconic sports car – the Corvette.
Initially debuted in 1953 in celebration of Buick’s 50th anniversary, the 1954 model was given a whole new look compared with the previous year, with large chrome fins, elongated fender cutouts and Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels.
The 1954 model was the final year for the Buick Skylark convertible due to the public’s dismay over the hefty $5,000 price tag.
This award-winning example, one of 836 produced for the ’54 model year, is finished in a stunning Malibu Blue with red wheel cutouts and “has received a no-expense-spared concours restoration to better than new standards,” says the Benson, North Carolina, dealer advertising the convertible on ClassicCars.com.
During the restoration, according to the dealer, the chassis was taken off the frame and the body taken down to bare metal and floorboards to be fully restored and detailed.
The chrome accents, including the bumpers, trim, vertical grille, window surroundings, tailfins and more, were all triple chrome-plated.
When the black soft top is down, an all-new blue and white leather interior with the correct waffle pattern is revealed.
The matching blue dashboard houses a cigarette lighter with the original instruction tag attached to it, and a two-spoke steering wheel with a chrome horn ring.
The convertible is powered by the high-compression 322cid Nailhead V8 engine made new for the 1953 model. It’s connected to a rebuilt Dynaflow automatic transmission, and the car is equipped with power steering.
“With low production numbers, extraordinary design, and nationally awarded, you will not be able to replace this one,” the dealer adds.
This Buick is being offered for $175,000.
