Around 20 yrs. ago Fords had the inertial fuel pump kill switch, with the reset in the trunk. Then the criminals found out about it. At night they'd purposely bump Fords to trip the switch, then rob the people, knowing they couldn't chase them. In my area the cops called it "Bump & Rob"(not very creative). Ford discontinued it soon afterwards.
If it's making a comeback, I see people getting robbed in the future.

My ford ranger had an inertia switch which the factory plug into it melted internally and caused it to no longer make contact.

Actually, regarding the Toyota and equivalent Lexus hybrids, Toyota actually has a very simple and reliable mechanism and set of electronics. Also, there are people that sell reconditioned batteries (bad cells replaced) so even a battery pack failure doesn't have to be catastrophic. I've seen multiple stories about people getting used Toyota hybrids dirt cheap that way.
