This question was submitted via Twitter by @FWGMills. His question comes from this article.

The article forecasts gloom and doom for the neighborhood mechanic. Perhaps on some level they’re right, but I like to remain optimistic. In fact, a smart person would consider this and possibly build a neighborhood shop around electric vehicle/hybrid service.

Also, I don’t think electric vehicles are going to take over anytime soon. I think we still have a few years to go before that happens.

Lastly, don’t forget, electric vehicles don’t really solve environmental problems. In fact, they could increase them. Lithium mining is toxic, nickel is toxic to mine, cadmium is toxic, and most power plants in the US burn coal to make electricity. This doesn’t seem like an environmentally viable option to me. At least with todays technology.

Just because it makes you feel better, that doesn’t mean it’s better for the planet.

That said, I’m looking forward to your comments and input on this one.

**Note: I realize there are moving black lines in the video. This is because of the frame rate my camera shoots at, and because I use florescent lights in the shop. The combination of these 2 things are the reason you see those black lines. I’m working on this problem, getting a new camera that shoots at a different frame rate and has anti-flicker. If that solves the problem, I’ll be doing more videos with DSLR’s.

I’ll also do more experimenting with the audio to make that better too.

Everything is changing now, is good to work and diagnose any type of your customers car.

Some good and honest observations, but there are a few points that are outside the control of the auto-mechanic industry. Firstly, EV's need far, far less maintenance and other than tyres and possibly suspension mechanics, need virtually no regular work. Secondly, when the market tipping point is reached, even the die-hard gasoline fans will be forced to switch. Gas stations will close down (not economically viable) and the production of gasoline will drop dramatically as demand plummets. People may have to drive very far to buy gas – which (because of low production and therefore no economy of scale) will be very expensive. Many if not most, people (certainly urban dwellers) won't need to own a car, so the dealership business model will die. Again… because it will just not be profitable to own such a business. If you remain dogged enough to want to buy a car, gone will be the days when a dealer could discount the retail price knowing that the profits come from downstream servicing. So, even in rural areas, when gas stations and car dealers don't even exist any more, people will have no choice but to use TaaS (Transport as a Service), or buy an EV.

i don't think it will there's information online about Hybrid EV battery disassembly, the wiring harness it takes a long time to do because they have a ton of wires but it's basically the same thing
transmissions on the cars i know it's also more effort and have more pieces to remove but all in all it's pretty similar. people will have to keep in mind though this battery won't give them a tickle like the regular car battery

I forsee a day soon when you will drive your vehicle into the shop and it will line up guided by lazers into a fixed position. From there robots will basically be able to replace any part on the car.
