The problem with the US now is that this tree hugger global warming myth prevails that's why you can't get the Mazda diesel engines now that double the economy of fuel use.
i have a 2018 mazda cx-9 gt with 68k miles it has had 1 hiccup the engine lost all power but when restarted everything was ok and no codes showed up.

Of course i have the 2016. No real problems on it. Coming up on 60k. Change the oil myself. Just did the rear diff and the oil that came out of it looked brand new. I'm considering changing the "lifetime" transmission fluid and filter lol.
The 1st Gen Forester will always be a classic! Simple, yet effective!
I'd probably be happy with either vehicle. I like the Subaru looks and I like Mazda's reliability and NVH refinement. The CVT automatic transmissions of today's vehicles always are a concern to me.. I currently drive a Rav4 AWD and I love it. I think I'll always stick with Toyota, just to be on the safe side.
The 2004 Forester XT was a badass little car. Only year with 4:44 gearing. Never had any problems with mine.
