I really like this advice more than just calling them 'endless money pits'. I appreciate the cautious advice and properly explaining to people that Mercedes are complex and usually not cheap to maintain so you have to be prepared. Keep up the good work Scotty.

Scotty, that applies to any european, either vw, audi, merc, bmw, citroen, peugeout, fiat, any euro brand is filled with small ECU's, however, mercs are still the most reliable of them, yeah, really, we mostly run diesels here, because, reasons (yes, diesel rules, gas sucks), my daily is a Citroen C4 2L TD, it has already 18 ECU's, even the tow ball is an ECU. We service only PSA and Mercedes, because they are good cars to work with and also very reliable, from vans to luxury models, s class and so on, and we charge only 50eur per hour 🙂 Mechanics forget the first rule nowadays. first read codes and diagnose from there. And that merc, he probably messed with the temperature sensor and brake pressure sensor, you cannot push back the piston with a closed bleeder valve, never.
You Don't buy one period!
I bought a German made Mercedes CLS here in the UK. It was a steaming pile of horse manure. In the 2 years I owned it it spent loads of time in the Mercedes dealership with expensive issue after expensive issue. Thankfully it was all done under warranty. But that car took me from being a Mercedes lover to exactly the opposite. And, yes, it had been meticulously maintained from new, being serviced exactly according to the Mercedes service requirements at the Mercedes dealership. In summary, the whole 'German build quality', based on my actual experience, is a myth. Certainly the CLS I had was extremely unreliable and would've been a money pit if not for the warranty. I still think it's a lovely looking car, but no point looking good if it keeps breaking.
