the best cure for high prices is high prices.
Problem is, like what happened to me, I had to get a car. Mine was at 290K miles, and was just not reliable anymore. I pushed it off as long as I could and started looking. Everything in my lower price range was total crap and no guarantee it was better than my current car. So many scammers out there too. It took me months before I stumbled on something. I hated to have to buy during this market, and financially I was limited and had to go through a dealership, which sucked even more. Ended up sort of lucking out, doing a private deal through the dealership with an employee. Still paid way way too much for a used car though, but at least I got something that was nice and maintained, I liked, and would work for my situation, and didn't have to pay the dealer fees. Still pissed off I had to buy during this time period.
There's a third reason some companies are making more 4 cylinder engines and that's that some countries have higher taxes for cars with higher displacement engines, Japan included.
