Scotty, rather than recording them in secret and fighting about it later, ask the salesman if you can record his conversation. You’ll get an honest answer very quickly and avoid all the hassle later.

it's the same never-ending story here in germany. garages will tell you all sorts of things : your brake lines are bad, brake pads, discs.. oh and your plastic tank is rusting ;D then I drive to Mercedes and they tell me : your vehicle is very good, but you'd be better off with a new one ;P so this is not just a US experience 😉
The problem is it can be illegal to record someone without their knowledge. You could be in court for a long time with lots of lawyer's expenses. Beware!!
