They haven’t been called an emergency brake in decades. They are parking brakes.
The E-Brake switch on my dads 2013 Land Rover LR2 just completely failed a few weeks ago, so happy my car still has a manual lever.

I'll take my old cable emergency brake and a standard transmission any day. Put on the emergency brake and try to take off, if it stalls on you its all working right.

The safety system of drive by wire will simply be another wire backing up the first wire , Many of us are driving cars with push button start now , that's an electric lock of the steering wheel when pushed , The old key start had to physically be pushed and turned before any lock of the steering.
