While Scotty is correct about AWD vehicles, there is a workaround to buying 4 new tires. I have a 2012 STi and on my way home one night I picked up a bolt. Went on TireRack, ordered the same exact tire that picked up the bolt and gauged the depth of the 3 good tires and had the new tire I bought from TireRack shaved to the correct depth. TireRack did it for me for about $30. It saved me $600. Hope this helps someone.
