Scotty… Great Mechanical Master of Tools and Internal Combustion… I pose a question, sir, it is: Do you believe that car manufacturers should mandatorily have to have Dashcams built in to cars? Should we change the law so that every vehicle has to have a number of cameras built in to it for insurance purposes? What do you think?

Always fantastic information shows you what you can do what you should do and of course what not to do. Always appreciated people should watch this because people just condem the most expensive part being the problem when it's not. Like I learned from my school that more often than not it's 5 percent chance of the computer that is at fault it will be the sensor. Now people that have that happen to them like they be driving and their car dies but won't kick back on they say oh it's the alternator, ok true but first check the battery if it can still withstand the cca (cold cranking amps) If it doesn't then no it wasn't the alternator, it was the battery now a car just dying on the road that won't happen that's like when you want to just start but always check it can actually be something real simple that a really difficult problem

I thought you were gonna talk about under-drive pulleys. You should talk about that

After 300,000 miles, my 25 year old Volvo alternator voltage regulator died, boiling the battery in the process. Like you said, I didn't want to go for a refurb "something" and the new price would have been double the monetary value of the car. As usual, my neighbours asked "why don't you just buy a new car?!" My answer, because for £30 i've just replaced the slip rings and voltage regulator and i'm done! I suppose I could have replaced the bearings while I was there but it's not so much of a deal to get at it again. I can't complain, they've lasted 300,000 miles so far and nothing was grinding so I left alone. It is sad that the old repair mentality in all products is eroded usually due to difficulty in obtaining specific components needed.

Denso is weird when it comes to rebuilds. They actually adhere to higher quality standards than their new parts do for some odd reason. The AC compressor in my 928 is a Denso unit and the old one failed from a bad R134 conversion. I get a genuine Denso rebuilt one and it looks and feels like a brand new part. Costs almost the same as a new one to… Still worth it to not have to worry about it though!

I remember the lights went dim on my old mondeo going to work one night. Started ok the following morning and on the way home the engine cut out. Managed to start it by dumping the clutch in gear but I had no dash lights just me and the engine running! A guy from my local garaged tested both the battery and alternator and it turned out the alternator was only putting in 11.3 volts. £168 and all was well again…

My alternator worked fine, it was down to 12v intermittently but it sounded like a supercharger the bearings were that bad. I had it changed out and it took 4 days for a new one from Mercedes Germany. The mechanic said he never wants to do one again, it was so hard to get too. 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD.

    Hello Scotty,
what would you say about having a 75 amp battery in a car with a 65 amp alternator? As I type this comment, the car cranks like; wof …wof …wof, wof ,wof, wof, wof, and then starts.
