    With the self sealing tires not coming out sooner, they have. Back in the 80's, Uniroyal came out with a tire called the Uniseal. There was an extra layer of a rubber/sealer material lining the inside of the tire. Chances are, you may remember seeing one of the displays. Uniroyal used to give dealers a showroom display that was kind of like a hand operated press. You were able to push a lever down that had a nail attached to it and it would go through a cross section of a tire. Overall, the system worked OK, but it was never really popular. They were only out for about 5 years or so.

    Also, I'm kind of surprised to see your comments regarding the Mazda CX-9. I'm a certified Mazda tech, and have worked on many of them. If the customer drove them responsibly and took care of them, they held up great. Most of the ones I saw that had over 100k on them still looked and drove like brand new. I suspect the CX-9's you worked on may have had a history. Its common when someone buys a used car. Who knows what it went through.
