£400 or so for a new head gasket or even something you can tackle yourself. Pretty cheap car if your going to get rid of it over that!

WRONG.
The Shop around my house quoted 6k to replace my 2012 Dodge Charger 5.7 HEMI Transmission. Transmission blew on the Freeway, had 120k on it.
Found a low mileage (43k) transmission on eBay (with warranty I might add) for 700.00, and had ANOTHER shop put it in with a new Transmission service/fluid for 600.00. Out the door for LESS THAN 1500.00.
Blown transmission IS NOT A DEAL BREAKER. It can be reasonably replaced.
My dad's rover 45 had aBlown head gasket repair was €800,didnt fix it,the garage told me its not worth it.
I don't understand why a replacement transmission would not work as intended if it came from the factory as a mechanic that doesn't make sense
