    I don't know that a separate infrastructure would work for autonomous cars either. Trains are on their own track, but still have to interact with roads ar crossings. Even with two separate travel lanes, there are still plenty of train vs car accidents. An autonomous car would still have to leave its road to access areas, so you'll still run into the same problem. Yeah the human could take over, but then you've got the same problem. Unpredictable driver trying to get off an autonomous highway, and all he'll breaks loose. If drivers and trains can't get along, drivers and driver less cars won't get along unless all cars are driver less. But who can afford that.
