I get why it is universally accepted that you should have a mechanic check out a used car before purchase. What I don't understand is how that works. What used car lot will allow me to take a car to a shop for inspection? Would a private seller allow that? Living in Houston, as a practical matter, I would have to plan on 3 or 4 hours minimum if the seller was on the other side of town from the mechanic, and if there was any wait time at the mechanic, it could easily turn into all day. I doubt I would agree to that if I was the seller. How is that typically arranged and what is an average cost for having a car checked out?
