It is NOT just Tesla that elect to replace parts instead of repairing them. It is an industry-wide practice that they firstly assured that the job is done right, and secondly they don't have to reply on their mechanics to be resourceful to do it right. Let's face it, quality work is dependent on the individual mechanic and all it takes is that the guy working on your car has a bad day and problem will come back to bite both you the customer as well as Tesla. Replacing parts (yes it is expensive), but they are assured that as long as the mechanic is competent enough to assemble things back as designed, chances of re-occurring problems down the road is minimal. I know in this case replacing the entire battery instead of a small component is a total waste of resource.

  3. All Electric

I feel sorry for electric  car  drivers and future  owners. They will simply  have to learn the hard way .. as I did. These things are a huge hassle, all those lost hours sitting in those  charging  stations, huge anxiety, plus a outrageous expense  in the long run. Good luck trying to sell a used Electric  car with wore out battery modules. You'll find out nobody  wants to pay  the ridiculous price of batteries … Batteries  are very … very expensive to replace ( thousands of dollars) …  and make no mistake, you will be replacing them. These batteries are highly toxic to our environment,  with a high potential for disaster to our surroundings.  LITHIUM BATTERIES ARE NOT GREEN CLEAN ENERGY BY ANY MEANS!  …

I wish I knew all this before I bought my car .  Do your homework before buying !

Isn't $700 for that job a bit expensive? I know the other option was 16K but still, how do we arrive at that number?

Very smart fix. I had the plastic return line on the fuel pump in my '01 SATURN crack and leaked a little bit so you could smell it. The repair shop said the pump was $385. I took it home, cut off the cracked tube and drilled it out and turned a brass tube that pressed right in there and the leak was fixed . Yankee ingenuity!!……….Cheers, Jim

Tesla kinda sounds like the MAC/APPLE of the car industry. If i owned a Tesla dealership with a shop and saw this, i would make sure all my techs know how and price the job.
