I looked for a used Toyota Sienna and found one they didn't try to get me in any other van.

The car that still runs for a few seconds after turning off the key may have a turbo timer on it. Runs at idle for a few seconds to let the turbo spool down and cool the oil a bit.

Every time someone brings up CarMax I bring up their most famous sales person, Maddy O’Rielly (don’t Google her at work)

Or the factory gets you on. Me:"I'd like leather seats". Dealer: " Oh. Then we can sell you package lu3386 for an additional $6,533"

I bought a like new civic once, from a honda dealer. Man they were smooth. The smoothest thing about it, was that after 3 hours of haggling, I got the price I wanted on the car. Then they walked me into the finance guys office. I did want a Honda Motors loan so I was prepared to go that route. What I was not prepared for was the most amazing good-cop-bad-cop routine, and misdirection. The finance guy was also the optional-addon-package guy. And he was far smarter and far more engaging than the salesmen. While telling me stories, and getting me to tell stories, he presented to me a 3 tiered chart/pricesheet, with "services" and "protections", and the Honda Corporate warranty as a bullet point on each one. He worked hard to get me to go for the top tier. I was already tired from negotiating on the price of the car, so I was in my mind, "OK, we'll let him go through his spiel, and I'll choose the bottom level, so I get my warranty, and it'll be over with." …By the gods though, he just really hammered away about how I could need emergency road service and hotel, etc. An hour later, he finally moved on to the next tier down ,from the top tier. He was halfway through his spiel for the second tier option, when I got my second wind. I looked at the sheet more closely, and as I was listening to him go on and on, it occurred to me that probably most people could endure this, and finally hold on, and choose the bottom tier. That's when it occurred to me, "That's what he wants. By the time he finishes pressuring/selling me on the top two tiers, the bottom tier looks like a bargain!!!" … I finally stopped him while he was mid-sentence, and told him politely that I wasn't interested in any of the three plans, and that I was going to walk if I didn't get my car. O. M. G. that's when all hell broke loose. He would oscillate between annoyance and being overly pleasant, while pacing, he brought in not a sales manager, but somebody much higher up when I stood up and said I was leaving. BTW, those addon packages were from highest to lowest, $7000, $5000, $3500. …the car itself was $11200. …That's highway robbery, to turn a $11200 car into $18,200 with a piece of paper offering services at 8x markup, that I would never use anyway. So now I wasn't angry, but I was actually feeling the momentum swing to my side. They were both agitated. I had taken up at least 4 employees time, totaling about 6 hours. I was smiling but informed them I was walking now. I had them now. I got them to show me the fixed rate Honda Corporate loan, with payment schedule, which I easily tabulated in my head, and knew I wasn't getting screwed interest rate wise. I was then informed that they could give me the extended warranty ala cart, without any addons, for the price of $1500. I had spent the last 3 hours pushing for an extended warranty, by itself, and when they finally offered it, I said "no thanks I changed my mind on the extended warranty, I'll take my chances. It's Honda! (5-speed stick of course)." That was the last straw for them. The finance officer walked out, and never returned, the mystery higher up, walked out for some water. He came back after a few minutes, and said "I can give you the extended warranty for $5 over cost, for a total of $695." …I said without thinking "sold!". I got my $11,200 Honda Civic with 6k miles on it. I got my extended warranty for $695. I got my Honda Corporate loan with a very low, realistic interest rate." I end up paying off the car in 1 year …I drove the car for 4 years, then gas hit $4 gallon. I sold the car for $10,200. So I basically drove the likenew civic for $250/year plus gas/oil/tinybitofinterest, and a set of new tires for the new owner. (insert laughing donkey face here)

I think Scotty fails to understand a few things. None of this matters if everyone wants the same car or home that you want.
Sometimes you have to pay the premium.
I challenge anyone to find a brand new model year Honda Pilot or Totoya Highlander for less then MSRP.
Same thing for my cars and home. If everyone wants the same thing, whether it be a popular car or a home in a excellent school system and nice area, you HAVE TO be willing to pay a premium.
Bidding wars for homes are common in my neighborhood.if you don't want to play the game then you can't get what you REALLY want.
I have friends who weren't willing to keep bidding higher, now that same home is worth $50k more than the highest bid.

Man Scotty, I wish I was in your area so I could have you as my mechanic. I got me a '85 crown vic that I've been keeping alive through the dreaded domino effect of part failures. I think you would get a kick outta it.

"Why buy a $1500 system when you can use a $50 one?"

Yeah, that picture is a good point… 🙂
