One of those shops double gasketed a drain plug and caused quite an oil leak for me. Caused some stress and inconvenience but I guess I’m lucky that the experience wasn’t way worse.
All the Jiffy Lubes I know of are franchise operations. Your story may be from a cheapie franchisee who hires folks who will work for pennies and have no mechanical skills. The one closest to me is owned by a friend and his brother (they own one other Jiffy Lube and two auto shops). They hire students for part-time hours from the local junior college auto tech program so all the staff have a basic knowledge of stuff like how to do an oil change, check other fluids, and check safety features. The brothers keep the best ones to work at their regular auto shops after they graduate from college. I get $10-off discount coupons, but no other free stuff, but I've never had a problem with the place so I keep going back there.
