Easier than all that. Just warm up the vehicle you're going to buy and see if you get heat when you turn the heater to high. If you get cold air- stop right now- either the heater core has been bypassed or the head gasket is blown.
Those are not the only clues. There are two additional clues

You missed one. Take the oil cap off. If there is a creamy deposit on the cap or you can see it in the hole where the cap goes, it is likely the head gasket is blown
So what you're saying is don't buy used cars, because their owners don't want you starting them before you buy them.
If it's not to bad buy it for a couple hundred dollars and try putting some sealer and drive it around for a while until it totally breaks.
