Christian Champin is a sculptor, but he never modeled wood or stone. He is an environmentalist, yet he never attended a protest. With a blacksmith grandfather and a father who did body repair for automobiles, working with metal is almost like a genetic trait in the Champin family. Making clever use of metal, old machinery, and whatever other discarded metal pieces he finds at the scrapyard, Christian welds together convincing sculptures of man and animal and uses them to comment on the state of the world and the issues we are facing. And in the process, he recycles. “[A] period of overproduced consumerism, the modern world is waste generator … From agriculture, automotive and industry, broken, rusty, bent, worn, the waste has a past, a message. Out of context, assembled by welding, diverted from their utility without expression, they become useless but alive. My work is focused on the movement of the harmony of form and sequence of curves.
