Look at the rust issues on any vintage car and most involve 2 layers of metal spot welded together.  The factory uses these seam types primarily to speed up the assembly process.  Why would you want to add an unnecessary layer that will create a rust problem all over again?  This should be a straight up butt weld repair.  Proper fitment and trimming would eliminate the need for a backer strip that will cause more rust.
