Body shops many times will sell a hood or fender from their trash pile next to dumpster. I will donate $5.00 to the shops beer fund! Like new, painted once with one dent or crease. I printed a sheet of metal gauge to thousands of an inch to use a micrometer to find thickness. I will mark the part with a marker for future reference. I have two rockers to weld on my sonβs 86 Monte SS and this comes off a hood with coatings on it. Flanging for flush fit allows for fiberglass filler to seal the joint while adding strength then filler & epoxy. Ready to high-build.
Cabin vents are not an item many ever think of. DOT in the late 70βs added inside vents to the list of must-have items. The allow air flow thru the passengers compartment to aid in fresh air, reduce future exhaust fumes but allowing the doors to close easier was a benefit. A rubber flap lays flat by gravity but when the last door is closed, cabin air pressure would build up keeping the door from closing completely. This causes the door to catch the second safety latch, causing the driver to slam harder. Vents can be added if the vehicle is tight and older. SUVβs have these vents at the rear hidden behind trim outside and slots in interior panels.
It is the same principle for gas tank re-fueling that shutoff every few seconds. The tank vents displaced air during refueling. Piping usually is routed thru the activated carbon filter vent. It allows the flow of fuel vapors to be caught by the carbon particles trapping them until purge is on. It is not just a convenience, but a requirement in smog states like California.
Thanks Pete for showing us how to repurpose good scape parts to fix rust!
