In this three part video series Otto will show you how to inspect your BMW or MINI for areas of wear in the mechanical and safety systems and hardware. Come on along as we go through a typical pre-spring vehicle inspection. Note that while these procedures are shown on a typical BMW, they can also be applied to the MINI models. A MINI will look different and the service points may be in different locations but, the basic points and procedures are the same.

Part one – Underhood inspection points –
In this video we will inspect the underhood service points on a typical BMW (and MINI).
Inspect the cabin air micro filter (microfilter) for debris or dark coloring. Replace the filter if dirty. Inspect the brake fluid by noting the fluid level through the translucent fluid reservoir. The fluid should be between the FULL and ADD marks. Remove the cap and check the color and clarity of the fluid. The fluid should be clean, clear and bright yellow or blue (depending on fluid type, such as ATE Super Blue). Pull the engine oil dip stick and check the condition of the motor oil. The oil should be light to dark honey colored and be translucent (you should be able to see through it, on the dipstick). Inspect the power steering fluid in a similar manner to the engine oil. It should be clear and bright red or light honey colored. The fluid level should be between the Add and Full marks on the cap’s dip stick. Check the engine coolant (antifreeze). The coolant should be clear and bright (blue, if BMW or green, orange or yellow for most other brands). the fluid level should be within a couple inches of the top of the filler neck or the pop-up fluid level indicator should be indicating between FULL and ADD. Continue the inspection by checking for play in the water pump and fan clutch. Inspect the belts for cracking. Look for evidence of coolant or oil leaks and note where the source of the leaks is. Plan for repairs for any leaks (coolant hoses, expansion tank, radiator, valve cover gaskets, oil filter housing gaskets, etc.).
Take note of any fluids that need changing, belts or hoses that need replacing, or leaks that need to be addressed and plan to take care of these issues. Now, click on to Part-2 and continue your inspection at the front undercar area.

My experience, owned a few BMWs. Car becomes unreliable and a money dump after about 50-60k. "Maintenance" is unreasonably expensive and many parts go out constantly with ridiculous replacement costs. Also, almost seems like they're built to make it hard for you to work on them. Have been a pain in my ass really. No longer have any respect for the hyped german engineering. Buy American or Japanese cars and save yourself the headache!

Great video. Question: As I wait for my Bentley manual to arrive for my E46 330ci, when checking my engine oil level I've been getting different readings (albeit all within range) on the dipstick. Should I check the engine oil when the engine is cold or warm? And if warm, how long after engine shut down should I wait for the oil to drain down in the block?

I'm considering purchasing a used BMW (it would be my first BMW) and watched this video in anticipation of learning about things to check on when I look under the hood. All told this video did that. Dealer/seller might freak out when I start pulling clips to look at that micro filter and the subsequent air filter but that just works in my favor so I don't look like a complete novice. Thank you!
One question if I may:
Any major differences out there I should be aware of between a 330 xi 325? Both are similarly priced, similar mileage & appointments and overall condition, not sure if I should choose one over the other, but the salesman seemed either indifferent or lacking in specific knowledge about the branding differences and I fare no better in terms of knowledge.
How reliable is the M54B30 I6 in the E46 3 series?
