I wonder if heating the surface with a blow dryer would have helped soften the metal a little making it easier to pull the dent out. On the other hand, maybe the hot surface would prevent the glue from curing.
Weird my kit came with 10 glue sticks

His first mistake was putting the dent remover in the center of the dent You want to work your way outside inward never start in the center.and just remember it will be a rinse and repeat cycle until dent is gone

Should clean the panel 1st with panel wipe to degrease and then heat the panel slightly to make it more malleable
I think the key to removing these dents is – as you said – patience mate. I've seen the professional car PDR videos doing similar repairs and they say it takes up to 9-hours depending on the severity of the damage, and they use proper tools for the job.
