I did a lot of my own wrenching, but transmission work I left to my friend who did transmissions for a living. He had all of the right tools and equipment and could do accurate diagnoses. He told me many stories, the best one was a Cadillac that wouldn't shift into the higher gears. He got it after two dealerships and one independent shop had given up. It was a modern automatic that used solenoids instead of hydraulics to shift. After getting the wiring diagram he traced circuits until he found a wire leading to a switch on the power steering pump. ??? He bypassed the switch and the transmission shifted perfectly. All that was required was a replacement pressure switch. This was nowhere documented anywhere in the service manual and he decided that they didn't want anyone driving very fast if the power steering was not working.

I rebuilt a Ford C4 transmission myself, in my garage, as a project. Was a great learning experience and the trans shifted great for the 5 years I had the car following that rebuild. I wouldn't try that today with a modern transmission.
