when it comes to reliable cheep cars I usually look at what taxi companies are using. Often taxi companies are running 10-20 cars so they have a good idea of what is good or bad.

Toyota or Suzuki, the only two car brands I trust. Everything else is garbage, including Mazda… oh sorry I mean the Japanese Ford company. How do you say "found on road dead" in Japanese, you say MAZDA.
