We had a 62 Corvair wagon, a 63 Monza, a 64 Monza and a 65 Corvair 500. I never experienced the instability that Nader complained of.

Oh my goodness. In 1965-1966, I used to drive w/my great-grandfather in his beige Corvair. Good times. I was 5-6 yrs old.

i had a 1966 140 hp 2 dr ht red on white int. this was my first car . i loved it still wish i had it back . good points aways started for me hot or cold . winter snow traction was great . gas mileage not bad at the time . good power for a light car . bad points shifter way to tight hard to get reverse . engine noise . front will lift at high speed .bad heater very little heat and bad oil smoke . dont get stuck in traffic how i didnt cook that engine is a mystery . and worst of all front end will slide in snow and wet roads .

A friend of mine had two of them, both swing axle. The convertible was his baby and it had an aftermarket attach bar/spring for the rear. I can't remember if he added a roll bar to the forward side. It also had modern tires and I don't remember him underinflating the fronts. He had some Crager style rims on it also, so they probably had a little extra width. I had to make it spin out, nothing that would have been considered normal driving. He also had a hardtop donor car with some really old tires. Not sure if they were 60's, but they weren't modern, that's for sure. It was stock and I remember it being squirrely if pushed. At 35 mph and standard driving, I don't remember it ever getting out of sorts even with the old hard tires, so maybe that lady had some other issues. We didn't trust the tires at highway speeds being so old and kinda dry-rotten. We did finally kill them in an abandoned parking lot acting like a bunch of idiots. Never tried them in the sand or on a loose dirt road.

GM has always blamed the driver and anything else. Even to this day.

My father bought a brand new 1962 Club Coupe 500 in 1962 and I was almost born in that car. I grew up in that car and was sad when my father had to sell it in 1969 with only 21,000 miles on it. Growing up in that car and mostly in Scotland and England I thought all cars were either small or had the engine in the rear. I was very used to that rear engine running sound and found it comforting on long trips specially when I was falling asleep.

Drove a 1962 Corvair from Fla to Los Angeles. I was 18 years old, in the Army headed for Korea. The car never had a problem. My service over, I bought a new 1966 Corvair and again no issues. I have always been a gear head, did most all my own service. Opinions are always debated, too bad for GM on this one. Not a chance in the face of the original tree hugger.
