Right now on the Tesla Y, it's just the rear casting. In the future, it will be 3 cast parts: the front longitudinals/cradle, the structural pack, and the rear longitudinals/cradle. It will make the car incredibly rigid, and will likely have a huge effect on body assembly quality (which they need, lol). The center pack can be replaced (even modern packs are rarely, if ever, opened). The front and rear castings can very likely be weld repaired. It's a non-heat treated cast aluminum. In contrast, many modern cars utilize HSLA steels that cannot be welded, particularly in areas that require high strength. Overall I see this as a positive, but yes it will affect the junk yard boys.

The insurance company would consider it a total loss and pay out under collision. And they would depreciate the value, actual cash value. If no insurance, I agree, a major hassle and financial loss.

Tesla buyers aren't the brightest bulbs in the refrigerator.

You know that same thing applies to battery tools like drill motors where the replacement batteries are insane priced. Almost as much as a new one.

As of two weeks ago the insurance rates for a tesla was still on par with ICE vehicles. If it was that common of a problem the insurance would be much higher.

Tesla's aren't made for main stream America. They're made for single dudes who make more money than they know what to do with it, and are Musk fan boys.

If you can buy a Tesla you will have it insured. If you wreck it and get a new one the insurance pays. I call that a win-win.
