Up here in Canada, Toronto Canada to be exact, they use salt and brine on the roads. Brine is a nasty stuff. My '05 1st Gen Mazda 3 'daily driver' is still rust free, and if anyone is in the know, they would be aware the 1st Gen 3's had a serious rust issue. I found the only method is to spray the whole vehicle with Krown formula; (Krown's own proprietary formula) and keep her clean and well waxed. Tars, waxes and most spray on products do little to prevent rusting and can actually retain moisture underneath.
I am way way north of you in Ontario, and I coat my cars with fluid film and it keep rust away. Plus if you have to work on its easily cleans off your skin.
