I can't 100% agree with this video in reference to the comment that CVT transmissions are not perfected yet. Yes there are problems with several model years of certain vehicles where the CVT's fail early, however there are many CVT transmissions that have been just fine. I have one in a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid 4×4 which is actually the very first SUV that had hybrid technology and my CVT has approximately 155000 miles on it problem-free. I did have a problem with the electronic braking system, and also the transfer case but that's about it on this vehicle, it's been pretty good. I think it's important to change the CVT fluid occasionally just like any other transmission to extend its overall reliability but I can't say anything bad about mine. I was not a big fan of them at first because of how different they drive, but I got used to it after a while. The concept of how it works is ridiculously simple, much like that of a snowmobile clutch but with a metallic belt submerged in CVT fluid. They are the wave of the future for getting more gas mileage out of modern vehicles
so we are going to have to get used to the fact that they are going to be around for a while. Hopefully Subaru, Nissan, and the other manufacturers that had problems with some of their versions work out the bugs if they haven't done so already. I know our company car is a 2012 Subaru Outback that had a CVT failure at around 120k, but Subaru extended their warranty and paid for the CVT replacement completely. That's a company that stands by their vehicles. I can't speak for the other manufacturers that had problematic CVT's.

Hey Scotty, I have 02 Honda Civic with 145k miles. A lot of mechanics tell me with that mileage I should switch to a thicker oil. My manual states to use 5-20 oil. What do you think?

my van I live in has 320,500 miles on it it's still going strong

Millions of Prius and Camry Hybrids are out there with their original transmissions. While it is technically a "Continuously Variable Transmission" they work differently than most CVTs, especially the first generation models that came out in the 90s to early 2000s that were crap. Toyotas' system is called Hybrid Synergy Drive and it is not a conventional CVT, they are actually quite reliable. Scotty often paints entire categories as bad, when real world driving experience proves otherwise. I have an '07 Camry Hybrid and the transmission works flawlessly. The only one I've heard of that has failed early was a rebuilt title car that the owner towed a trailer with.

We've not had an issue with 2015 Corolla with cvt. 175000 miles already and only issue was recall where they did a software update.
