    I knew a guy that worked at Todd ship yard who told me they would weld aluminum superstructure to steel deck using thermite paste. They would strike an arc and the paste between the two materials would ignite and weld the whole joint. Only time I've heard of welding Aluminum to Steel.

    You can weld steel to aluminum, but its not wise as they are dissimilar metals and this will cause the iron to rust rapidly.

    I've dune it twice myself over the last 20 years , I don't know how either but both times I did it I was using a manual metal ark / stick welder

    Brazed (melted) the aluminum to steel.
