My first car was a '69 Fastback. I preferred the extra wheelbase and leg room of the Type 3. There were many VWs in the stories of my youth.

Does anybody know how they did in the snow?

I had one of those in High School in the 70's.. It was fun until the rust "fell apart in front of my eyes"

  8. The Electric Wrench

That's weird I just acquired a 61 convertible Beetle it's basically Parts though just a rolling chassis and is rough as a Cobb..like unbelievably rough nothing much left of it but hey it is a convertible 61 bug and it was free…lol

I still remember back in the mid 80's when Honda Accords and Civic were really popular, and they were getting 25-30 MPG when everyone else was driving gas buzzlers like trucks that were getting 12-14 MPG (nowadays even some V8 trucks can get 20 MPG which was almost unheard of back in the day even 30-35 years ago).

Actually if you watch some of the NHTSA videos of crash test, unfortunately these didn't do to well. And on top of that, I think they had a top speed of 65 MPH being it was an air cooled engine probably. But from the people I know who had them, said they were really easy to work on (the engines).

Having the fuel tank in the front, I don't think that would pass any safety regulations these days, not to mention no seat belts or 4 way flashers. It's amazing how much we sort of ignored back then, and yet people survived, and nowadays we have cars that can practically drive themselves.

(However, looking at some of the paint, was the fenders maybe repainted or is that just the lighting? In some regards, they look lighter colored than the body…)
