Civic type r is standard transmission with rev match technology. Brother has a civic hatch with a b16 Vtec engine swap. They truly are great and fun cars to drive.
I have the 2005 matrix XRS. No it's not a type R Civic but will keep close to the Civic SI and a ton of fun to drive. It has a redline of 8400 and pulls strong all the way. I'm up to 126k miles and not a single issue. No door handle broken yet and interior fit and finish is better than civics from that era. My wife leased a 2015 Corolla and again not a single issue with a ton of room for a compact vehicle. A recall is not necessarily a bad thing especially if it is a proactive move to address things. The cvt issue effected not the vast majority of people. Honda's approach on the other side is not to deem it a problem fix the one offs and not bring attention to a common issue. Both are well made cars are the backbone models for their respective brands. You can't go wrong either way. And btw test drive a Mazda 3. It will surprise you on the fun to drive factor.
