What grit sandpaper do I use to sand Bondo?
First step: Prep the Surface
Make sure to sand outside of the repair area as Bondo will need to be spread and applied wider than the damaged area. (36-grit to 220-grit should do the trick for body filler application).
Can You Sand Down Bondo?
Cut and sand
Once the Bondo cures, it’s time to sand. Power sanders are OK to break the surface and knock down any high spots, but hand sanding with the body contour is the best way forward. Cut in with heavier grit sandpaper and work out to about 80 grit to leave a tooth for the following skim coats.
Does Body Filler Go Bad?
In a heated storage room, the polyester body filler will last several years. It’s just the hardener that goes bad. Paste hardener should be kneaded in the tube to reach a smooth uniform consistency every time before it’s used.

Great job again my friend Pete thanks for all the advice 👍
Best instructional ever. Thanks Pete
Great explanation. Body filler spread on then Hutchins hand file with 36 grit works every time. Learn to read the highs and lows in the filler, it is also a tool!
nice work Pete, it's obvious you're not just some guy that paints cars, you're a true paint & body man
This intrigues me, I have a ex-marine buddy that owns a body shop and he is always telling me that when I am ready to learn body work he will show me the way. To him it is almost some sort of religion. Much like Pete, he is always telling me that quick is ok when you need it done but perfection is in the hands.
Pete, I love the hand broom action during production of the filler shaping. You have said it before but it keeps it from getting on everything in the shop. Thanks a great deal for sharing the basics and tools for starting a repair. One can not stress the basics enough. I be down for a week and check back in, on the lessons and fun at DIY Auto School.
That's crazy,I was a beginner 35 yrs ago,and in a blink of the eye 35 yrs seems like 10 yrs.Now I know why they say life is short.🤔🤔🤔
Good video on this Pete letting beginners know that you need to do the body work with thumbs up 👍
Pete is a little rough around the edges but that said he really is a touchy feely kind of guy, that's what makes him so adorable.
The Camaro looks really nice Pete. I'm sure the owner will be very pleased.
May God bless you and yours.
