Just out of curiosity how does this work accurately? You chose a fixed point an inch away from the centre of each hub cap, then the distance between the two strings was greater as the rear axle width is an inch wider than the front basically creating an angle from front to back. Surely just moving the back further away from the initial reference point is just more guess work and putting things further away from your initial reference point. In a practice that involves having things degree perfect, surely this just creates more inaccuracies?

My wife had new tyres a few months ago and the inner edges of her tyres are worn right down already and I suspect the tracking was either not done or done incorrectly at the fitters, so I thought I would look for a way to do a basic check at home myself. Surely this method is only accurate if both front and rear axles are the exact width apart to get a true plumb line. Or am I missing something here?

This is an excellent video,, I definitely think it would be very accurate to use a good strong fishing line instead of the string shown in order to get a good reading with the tape measure, I always use it and it works so well because you can see the perfect line to do the adjustments needed.

Thanks, the video helped me center my steering wheel after changing the inner and outer tie rods.

Turning the wheel each time doing adjustment is just inaccurate and time consuming. Put the car on ramp, center steering wheel, dont touch it until done and do adjustments accordingly.
