I've used a soldering iron to fix cracks in my motorcycle fairing almost exactly like this, only I had a piece of broken plastic from another fairing to melt into the valley..

Couldn't you have just used a 2 part epoxy on the back and then a fiberglass resin on the front..
When do you know to use the plastic weld vs fiberglass or an epoxy based glue..?

Pretty neat! Always wanted to know how to weld with plastic. What I have been doing is use Fiberglass mesh from screen doors and windows and glues the mesh to the joint with 5min epoxy, then Bondo the front.

The wire mesh is that a special screen for that or will metal window screen work? TY

This is old stuff. Shops have been repairing plastic parts (dashboards, etc) for decades. Most use a standard soldering gun, a piece of metal window screen, and whatever scraps they can snip off the part for a filler. There are even molds to match the rough surface patterns of the plastic. The repair is almost impossible to detect.
