I just bought a 2005 BMW 325i for $2,300 with 150k miles. 2 days I had to take it to the mechanic because the belt was making noise and here are the problems.. It's dripping oil on the left side of the engine and when the mechanic put it on the lift the arm control is bad and it's dripping transmission fluid.. Now and days you can't find a descent running car. Every year I end up buying a messed up car.

I think it depends. Some are not too bad. They are better than Mercedes as far as reliability. I go to University and I know a lot of kids who drive used 3 Series and swear by them. Some have issues, but usually they are the beat up ones. I've been told there are certain years to avoid. I almost bought one a few years ago, but was short a bit of cash. Wanted the AWD. Boy did I ask around to make sure the one I was buying would be ok. From what I've learned, do your research. Turbo models of certain years have some issues. The N/A cars are usually ok based on the people I've talked to, but ask around. Certain parts need replacing around certain mileage. As far as vehicles with problems even if you take care of them, I've seen far far worse. Just make sure they got the car serviced by a professional, and if something feels off, listen to your gut.

I work at a BMW dealer in UK, as soon as they run out of warranty they fall apart, after 3 years we have to change tie rods as they sieze up due to having a really fine thread where corrosion sits in. We are loving their recalls though, keeping us busy and earning lots of bonus.
