I think the bad rap these(and some other makes) get is because the owners flog them to death and since they are harder to work on, don't fix them.
SCOTTY if you look on the front cover of 1996 popular mechanic's. I had a family member get together with a another one. They designed a Dodge intrepid for DaimlerChrysler. It ran on a 3 cylinder diesel motor. At each tire was a electric drive motor, powered off the generator the petroleum motor powered. Its like in a big mining truck's use. It was based off thr designed he drew up for Cattapiller Years ago. That's how heavy mining Dump trucks are powered to this day. The car got 600 miles per gallon of fuel. Dodge was going to out it into production by what I was told by 1999. But they shelved it. The reason, "To economical"!!! They told them the car would single handedly ruin the oil industry over night! Take a look. Can't remember what month it was. But there were only 6 a year I think back then. I'll see if I can find a link. Also check out Hemming Motor News. Pretty sure that's where it first broke.
