In Japan and Singapore (and it sounds like HK) you cannot buy a car unless you have place to park it. This doesn’t mean you have free space. It means you have registered spot to park it. No spot no car. I heard when I was in both countries back in the ‘80s that there is a black market for parking spaces. As you mentioned. the space may be worth more than the car.
