GM automatic transmissions are basically a problem going somewhere to happen, has been that way for quite a while. Their Iconic TH350 and TH400's if you work on transmissions are practically a nut bolt and washer copy of a Chrysler 904 or 727 and they were reliable, that is if you kept the transmission oil changed. The Chrysler didn't have that issue due to they held about a gallon more oil, due to smaller oil pan and smaller torque converter. Now GM developed their 4 speed automatic series, well the first ones were simply JUNK, over the years and numerous revamps it got all the way up to it works if you are easy on it. The Dodge 4 speed transmission had issues with the electric controls, heat was the issue. Did you ever notice that the Chrysler 4 speeds had shift issues at over 100k and the Diesels didn't ever have issues. The difference is OMG the Diesels had a aux oil cooler for the transmission, the oil ran up to 40 degrees cooler. The gas engines had actually a oil heater for the transmission, running the transmission oil thru the radiator with the water temp hovering around 200 degrees isn't exactly the most intelligent idea. I changed numerous Chrysler's with transmission issues down to changing oil/filter and then taking the oil heater off and installing a oil cooler external of the radiator, and damn the problem went away.
