Come along as I have a look at a 2015 Kia Sorento that has been at the dealers countless times and another local shop to see why the heck this thing won’t start! It cranks over just fine but won’t start…. sometimes. The other shop towed it to me to see if we could make heads or tails of it. Let’s have a look.
-Enjoy!

    Love your content and methodology.
You had the answer at the very beginning of your troubleshooting, the brown/ black wire is a ground control signal from the pcm to turn on the relay, you need to have a hot on one side and ground on the other to make a coil work. Service data tells us that the pcm controls the ground control side of the relay and monitors every 10 seconds, sets a code if an open or ground is detected for 5 seconds of that 10 second period. My best hypothesis, since there was hot power going in the relay and the intermittent function, is that the terminal with the dry contact was the control ground from pcm. Also, the diagram from service data showed an output from the relay that goes to a sensor 2 being monitored by the pcm that's how it knows it relay is not closed. I will never understand why the manufacturers don't make this easier to interpret.

What happened to the Kia 10 year warranty??? Do you live too far off the grid to qualify?

I’m surprised that the dealer couldn’t figure this out. Maybe I shouldn’t be though. Don’t mess with the woman who owns this Kia.😂

As a retired field engineer who serviced medical electronics I have to say your process and obviously good result was perfect. To anyone who would critique this technique I would say they have never followed a guy who took short cuts and had to fix both a customer and the problem. Great job. Cold shoulder joints are a major problem in any equipment that vibrates. I would have guessed you fixed the problem without out replacing the part. I get it it though and for the price it was an easy bet. Great job.
