Pet peeve customers that watch to the point that they ask questions every five seconds that detract you while working in the bays the customers that have to see everything you are doing makes you fell like you cant ever fix what they want right because they nit pick everything you do
“well the guy in an online forum said…”
when I have my car booked I always ask in advance if its ok to drop it off at half 7 in the morning and pick it up later in the afternoon as its just around the corner from my work, they're usually happy to do that and they call when the work is done so I can pick up on either my lunch break or after I've finished work, they just move it to a spot near the back of the car park out of the way of everything, works for me, works for them.
And, to save time I just tell them for an MOT anything that costs £100 or less just go for it and do it saves me and them a whole bunch of time
changing a tire that has fix a flat in it with no warning from customer or service writer
wheel locks and they DONT have the key
wiring that they tried to fix before they took it to you
A lot of what you're saying is exacerbated by bad mechanics. Shit mechanics that have tarnished the name of good mechanics by over exaggerating problems or even in rare cases creating problems to fix to fraud customers. So people tend to want to wait till things actually fall apart before fixing it. Appointments? Shit… These days it's pretty much par for the course that an appointment is only an appointment to actually drop your car off, as ridiculous as that sounds, and not an appointment to actually begin work on your vehicle. This is extremely exacerbated by stealerships that take appointments and then don't even wheel your car in for hours or even DAYS so people have just lost their sense of urgency on appointments. Why? Because mechanics don't show that urgency in fixing their cars. Waiters? People want to make sure the work is being completed. If i take my car somewhere and I'm losing the convenience of my car for hours on end i want to know I'm actually being worked on for most of that time. This goes back to the appointment thing. Also, i like watching them work. Lets me know the work is actually being performed and that precautions are being taken to ensure good work and careful handling of my vehicle is being taken into consideration. As a tech, and a customer, i know techs aren't 100% careful. They get lost in their grind and let impact guns skitch across your nice painted rims or bump your doors on the lift or rest tools on your hood. Worst yet, they deny it when you confront them on these things. So techs have built this reputation for themselves. I know some really.. Really good techs that kick ass and care about their work. But i know, by far, a lot more… Could even be called a super majority… That give zero fucks and their skill set is so low they have no business even owning a wrench. I'm not saying customers are easy to deal with or that you don't have basis for these opinions, but consider the historical precedent that exists for why people are sometimes inconsiderate of the mechanics needs. I mean you guys are like doctors to some people. Only see you when something is wrong and they know it's going to cost them an arm and a leg to fix and half the time it won't get fixed cuz the doctor may or may not be a sham. Sad but true.
I had my first bad customer. A older lady in my neighborhood had a engine noise and I noticed her engine belt was worn. She agreed to replace the belt. She declined a brake job due to finances. I swore to never accept customers like this. But she had a nice Lexus and looked well off. I found the water pump leaking when I replaced the belt. I told her by email she needed a water pump. No reply for 2 days. I get a email about her car was stranded on the side of the road and Lexus charges her 400 bucks to diagnose it. And it was towed. On and on. Lady threatened to sue me. I sent a email with pictures and made a video about the bad water pump. I told her I have proof I told her it was bad and needed replaced. I told her if she caused problems I would show proof to all of my customers and the public. The lady then said never contact me again and i will ruin you image. Lol. I think she knew it was bad and tried to con me. Still sucked..
I'm not in the business, but as a customer, my biggest pet peeve is having some techs, (not all), when replacing your wheels, torque the crap out of the lug nuts to the point where you stand zero chance of breaking them free with the factory wrench. You MIGHT break them free with a star wrench, pb blaster and copious amounts of cursing. I take great care of my vehicle and always tell them to torque my wheels to spec.
Use of the word technician and professional in the same sentence is an oxymoron, mechanics are the real deal.
1: The people who stand right next to you, telling their life stories, while you're trying to work.
2: The people who say they watched a 15 minute video on how to change the steering rack of their Dodge minivan on Youtube so the job should only be 15 minutes.
People that think they are the most important thing in your life!
