You should also look at the oxygen sensor. If it is light gray no residue maybe. If your oxygen sensor is black with a black carbon build up (rich fuel), or heaven forbid oily build up. Most likely the oxygen sensor is bad. I have replaced many oxygen sensors, all downstream. They all have been on high mileage older cars, and the check engine light has never came on.

The 4 wire O2 sensors have a built-in heater to optimize emissions Scott Sir 🧐

Hmmmm and what makes a car run rich and lean?

  4. Travis Jernigan

The heater portion quit working on the mini Cooper, but I refused to pay $359. I sold the Euro junk.

I won't my waste money on this, thanks for the tip!

Most of the ones I've replaced were under $30 for the Denso brand and they did go bad.

Had to check. A Lambda sensor cost 25-40$ for my car 😁 so no worries to just replace 😁
