It's important to remember that these days the "check engine" light will only come on if a fault is detected that means your car no longer complies with emission limits. If your engine is about to split in to, it doesn't care. If you're killing the baby seals, it cares. So in this case the light wasn't on because of bad spark plugs. It was one because of the evap valve.
