The real reason they change refrigerant is because the refrigerant patent runs out. No money in refrigerant that anyone can copy.
When r134a first came out it was also really expensive and people complained.

Hi Scotty, can you show us how to do it with out that sophisticated system you have?
R-12 was the best. It’s like a $20,000 fine if you get caught releasing it into the atmosphere. They require it to be recaptured in a tank. I’d still use asbestos brake pads and header/ downpipe insulation if I could find it. Great performing material. The air is known by the state of California to cause cancer, so hold your breath.stupid state.
