    You don't actually need to take the battery out to preserve it, you can just disconnect the cables. When you're ready to drive it again, just reconnect them.

    Keep the top of the battery clean. Dust will combine with acid mist from off-gassing and create a conductive film that slowly drains the battery while sitting.

    spray WD-40 (its electrically conductive oil) on battery terminals, any other grounds, corroded wiring / connections

    While at the auto store today, I was stuned that batteries these days cost around $150. I buy used batteries from a nearby scrap yard for around$47. and have no trouble! Cars are often totaled with good batteries!
