Man I felt those first few seconds, just recently I damaged one of my rims (fortunately, very lightly, as it turned out after polishing) by turning too tightly into a kerb and oh boy I was not a happy camper either 😉 My tires have the "rim protection" thing and I think it helped a little? Some of the "damage" turned out to be just dirt that I think transferred from the rubber.

What about the lacquer that’s often applied to machined wheels? Scratching that off is going to allow water to further damage the opened face.

I've only ever curbed my wheels when using pirelli tyres lol. Michelin and Goodyear tyres have a decent lip on them which have saved me a few times.

The tires look like the actually don't protect the rim as they normally do. Could simply be a fitment issue that could have prevented this much damage.
