Can you fix a dead car battery? Yes, you can, well sorta! In this video HOW TO REBUILD A CAR BATTERY for UNDER $5 BUCKS we see how some baking soda and Epson salts can fix a Dead Car Battery Fix and Revival of a Dead Battery.

This didn’t work the first time for me when I tried to rebuild a car battery in my 1967 Porsche 912/911, it took a few tries before I found that it takes about 8 to 10 ounces of epson salts per liter of distilled water to get the right mix.

But fixing a dead car battery isn’t hard to do, but the time it takes to recharge or rebuild a car battery it might be better just to buy a new battery. This process takes several days, and if you need your car sooner, then by all means just buy a new battery and maybe keep your core (old) battery as a back up and follow these steps to rebuild a car battery.

Q: Has anyone tried putting in new battery acid instead of the epsom salt/distilled H2O mix?
AutoZone sells a quart for around 11 bucks.

Thanks for going through that. I've seen this in a few other videos which attempt to rejuvenate an old battery

My experience is that my time is better spent driving to Costco to buy an Interstate battery for about $100.

Here is what I have found. Often my batteries do sit awhile and don't get the proper charging that they should.

On the last two Costco batteries which this occurred for me, I took them back to Costco. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they only charged me $5 to replace a three-year-old battery with a new

A buddy of mine, who also took back a three-year-old Costco battery actually got paid $5 and a new battery from Costco.

Not saying this will happen for you, but why not get a little peace of mind with a new battery. Who knows +/- $5, plus a new battery could also be in your future,. LOL.

But seriously, we all have to gauge what our time is worth versus the effort we're going to put into Old parts.

so does that mean I need 27oz of Epson salt for the 1gallon?

That's not a "dead" battery, it's just weak on volts.

Why couldn't you have used the funnel put the baking soda in The Jug and then just shook it up or took half of the water out put the baking soda and then put the other half of water back in

How long does it take for a battery to get damaged if its just set aside, not connected to something and sits awhile?

I set one aside, and forgot about it. Wasn't there long but 3 months maybe with it just sitting nothing connected to it. And worried about if permanent damage.

    Thank you for the video.

Will this same process work for deep cycle batteries? Or is it different to refurbish them?

Also at 10:00 you said you let the new salt solution sit in the battery for 24 hours. Then you showed it being charged for about 8 hours. At that part you didn't say whether or not there needs to be a break in that period before you start charging it? Or can you start the charging while its sitting with the caps off?

    Thanks.

At some point people will be redoing all of these kinds of videos because now more people use deep cycle batteries than before. And those are different than car batteries. And lithium reacts… badly to water. And people didn't have to used to worry about lithium batteries. But now a lot of people are using lithium batteries, and someone will probably try to refurbish them like this also. And that will probably be dangerous and have a different process.

People will probably start to put warning tags also to not refurbish batteries the same way for Lithium, etc.
