Buying tools as a new mechanic is scary and mechanic tools are expensive. In the US most shops require new mechanics to provide their own tools. I wanted to see if I could build an Apprentice Mechanic tool box for under $2500. This is enough tools to get someone started working on cars. The best part, the dealer will be giving this to the next apprentice they hire!

HUGE thank you to @ScannerDanner for his contribution to this project! ~

    As a mechanic.
    Always start cheap.
If something you use consistently breaks. Upgrade and go by that.
If you have to barrow a tool more than 3 times, you should buy that tool.
These are rules I go by

I have been a mechanic and body mechanic for about 20+ years… I started out with all those tools.. paid snap on and matco and cornwell for over 20 years… then one day the shop got broken into and the shop and stole everything.. the shop didnt cover it because I I needed to insure it under my home owners insurance… I really miss my box and tools

    Short rant on multimeters:

Get whatever, fine–it'll probably be okay. But the real killer on them, is getting probes that aren't the damned "i'll just poke a hole in this insulation" tips if you can. The little clampy things that let you free your other hand and ensure you have a reasonable connection waaaaay over there? Huge, huge value.

The others that are super cheap that I love are t-handle socket drivers (square drive). Put that noisy stuff away and just spin stuff off! And a 1/4" drive rotator ratchet–there's non-snapon ones available that are legitimate life changing happiness when you have almost enough room to swing a fine-toothed ratchet three clicks.

(Disclaimer, I'm a motorcycle guy–working in stupidly tight spaces comes with the territory, so I usually have more problems with access than absolute power on a fastener.)

Great video. Bring a tech for 15 years I Wish I could go back start off like that. You get caught up when everyone else has snap on tool boxes and you end up with a tool box that cost more then the truck you drive to work. lol.
Great advice for starting off in a trade that cost so much to get into.
