The factory in China is not intended to make car to send back to the US. The factory in China is to make cars for China, because currently when they send cars from the US to China, they get hit with Tariffs. Tesla will still keep the US factory for US & European sales. As for the technology factor. If all these car companies could make an electric car really easily, how come they are releasing vehicles which have the specs of a 2012 Tesla
I'm with Scotty on almost all of the topics he covers but his aversion to Tesla is hard to understand. Any way I am looking at it, Tesla's future is brighter than any of its rivals.
Tesla's Chinese factory will be built within months(!) and production will be robotic. The Chinese would rather buy Tesla although they have plenty of locally made electric vehicles plus a couple of companies that aspire to take on Tesla's niche.
Even if Tesla's US manufacturing phases out (hard to imagine), it will be fine with just the Chinese market alone, not to say anything about other countries – like Norway where Tesla is #1 in sales.
If any company has any infrastructure for its EVs, it's Tesla.
However, Scotty is absolutely right about the US grid being not up to the challenge – but it's not only Tesla then. All the companies that invest in developing their electric vehicles will have to face it.
One thing is certain: Tesla is too big to fail. It's hundreds of times bigger and has more experience and data to work with EVs than any other company.
In the worst of cases they might sell it to someone with a shitload of cash – Apple comes to mind.
What was Tesla thinking? Scratch that, why wasn't Tesla thinking, that's the better answer!
Don't understand why are you Scotty pushing against electric cars?
You keep bringing That electric bike you reviewd but it only has 50miles of range, Tesla has min 200~ miles of range, so those are are completely different things.

Scotty, when I visited Shanghai for a week, I saw more electric cars in one street than one town in the United States. The Chinese already have a lot of cheap electric car brands. Brands most Americans will never know about.
