Nice new Intro Scotty!!
Scotty is a Mechanic – not a machine learning programmer. I don't think you'll need separate lanes for self driving cars… the cars will go from incompetent to driving better than humans to being far superior in like 6-10 years. Hardware advances quickly, as do algorithms. Far faster than humans.
We're still in the incompetent phase, and may be until 2022-2024.
I would guess that by ~2030 we'll have pretty capable self driving cars, that make very few mistakes. By 2040 they should be extremely capable and nobody will be concerned about using them for all driving, sending their kids off in one, etc.
